Secretariat Foundation

Welcome to the Secretariat Foundation webpage!

From the beginning of his unrivaled racing career, Secretariat began not just to transform the sport of thoroughbred racing but also to exert a unifying, healing influence on the nation as a whole.  Ever since Secretariat’s coronation as “America’s Horse” in 1973, our mother Penny Chenery carried on his legacy in celebration of athletic performance, personal character, and public service.

In 2003, Mom founded the Secretariat Foundation to provide concrete support to the causes of equine veterinary research, thoroughbred retirement, support of injured and disabled jockeys, and education for the betterment and welfare of thoroughbred horses.  Her family is proud to continue that tradition and to carry forward that legacy.  The Foundation makes annual grants to organizations serving the Foundation’s mission.  For more information on how to apply for a Secretariat Foundation Grant, please contact us here.

As part of our family commitment to Secretariat’s legacy, we donate a portion of royalties from every purchase made from any one of Hildene’s official merchandising partners listed on the Merchandise page of this website to the Secretariat Foundation.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Secretariat Foundation also gratefully receives donations from the public.  We have received estate donations, employee match, corporate grants, and many individual grants.  You can make your donation by clicking on the button below.

If you are considering a corporate, organizational, or estate gift, please contact us here to discuss details.

The Secretariat Foundation is a 100% volunteer organization, and we have no staff or office expenses. You can therefore be assured that over 95% of your donation will be devoted to our charitable mission.

Warmly,

Kate Tweedy, President
